So before this season’s adventure began, a friend of mine said, “Why do you want to go cruising? You will get bored.” Ha! I am neither bored nor tired of living on a sailboat and cruising! What a life! We make day-to-day travel decisions based on the weather, which is always exciting. And given we travel on a sailboat, we strive to move with the wind to save on fuel and to reduce our carbon footprint.
When we are at anchor or in port, we have ample opportunity to get off the boat and explore, meet new people and fish. I love trekking around in the woods looking for mushrooms, flowers and animals to identify and photograph. In Haida Gwaii, every anchorage was the site of an ancient village or Haida camp at one time or another. There are subtle signs of their presence in the creeks and forests, like remnants of fishing weirs and midden beaches. There are not as many flowers here as there are on the Central Coast due to the over population of non-indigenous Sitka deer that eat all the understory, but we’ve been able to find some regardless.
The fishing never fails to entertain and fill the freezer. Below is about a 40-inch lingcod I caught and the meat from just this one fish.
There are lots of birds and animals to see.
Being able to visit Haida villages in Gwaii Hanass was a once-in-a-lifetime event. I left feeling that I should stay longer. I also felt sad about the never-ending oppression of indigenous people and companies exploitation of natural resources without regard to the long-term effects on the world around us and future generations.
So is cruising boring? You tell me.
I’m envious! I love reading about your adventures and seeing your pictures.
Stupid question. On the map. What does the dotted red line you appear to be following represent? My guess is Canada Border?
No question is stupid. The answer is, “We don’t know. Our route is denoted by the bright blue track.” We’ll research what the red dotted line means.
Ling cod was my favorite fish to eat during our sailing adventures! Thank you for continuing to feed my memories and letting me live vicariously thru your adventures in the north west.
I think of you often, Deb! Please come join us any time!!!
