Welcome Aboard!
Consider this the official journal of Sundown Sailing Adventures. It will chronicle how we prepare for and live life aboard our new-to-us 1982 Hans Christian 33t sailboat (and some of our other adventures).
We hope to inspire, educate and entertain readers from across the globe.
Stay the course; we plan to publish a new post about once a week, but will share other interesting articles and websites as we find them.
Be part of the adventure by subscribing to receive email notifications when we post something new. Also, “Like” us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@sundown_sailing). Thanks!
Note: I took our masthead photo in August 2009 while cruising the San Juan Islands off the coast of Bellingham, Washington. My husband and I were aboard Argonaut, a Hans Christian 43, during the Basic Sailing to Bareboat Charter Certification (ASA 101, 103, 104) course we took through San Juan Sailing.

Hi, my best (and longest) friend lives in Ft Collins; she shared one of your FB posts with me. We grew up together in Kansas. My husband and I took a mid-life retirement and circumnavigated in the late 80’s and early 90’s in our Cheoy Lee. We loved our sailing life, wouldn’t have missed the opportunity for the world. Hans Christians are lovely boats, we sailed with several. I see from your posts that you’ve been hard at work – which is great training for further cruising. Sun, heat and salt water are not kind to anything… and all stainless rusts eventually.
The people were the very best part of cruising – both the locals we met, and the other sailors.
What a nice surprise you had, running into the kid you had hosted all those years ago. That will be the first of many such meetings as you make your way cruising. We sailed with a family from Port Angeles – their dive instructor there was the son of my dad’s best Army buddy. We kept running into people we had met many years, and many anchorages, ago – the reunions are the best!
We live in Ottawa, Canada now, and still own the same boat – the honeymoon cottage, as it were. Bringing her to Ottawa was not a kind thing to do to her; the winters wear her down and age her, as they do her owners. It’s almost time to take her out and winterize her, my least favorite time of the year.
What are your plans? Going down to Mexico for the winter?
Please let me know if we can answer any questions – provisioning and galleys are my specialty!
I wish you fair winds and following seas, and the very happiest of experiences!
Carolyn Johnston, sv Spallpeen
Carolyn, who’s your Fort Collins friend? Thank him/her for telling you about us. We’re already meeting interesting people.
What are your top three tips for organizing the galley? Provisioning? We’re open to all suggestions.
We’ll probably hang out in the San Juan Islands this winter and mosey up to Alaska next summer. After that, we’ll head south, but not sure how south we’ll get before next summer. We have no definite plans and will make them based on weather and what we feel like doing. Keep following! It will be like, “Where in the World is Sundown?”
Thanks for your very nice note. Keep ’em coming.
Kim and Clay
ok I’m living vicariously through you guys.
Wish you were here! We could be buddy sailing.
